Community Involvement |
The Fort Bend Symphony Orchestra (FBSO) makes a special effort to reach the community by maintaining a website, publishing a newsletter, working with local schools and teachers, performing in a variety of locations in the community, liaising with senior groups, providing access to the arts for persons with intellectual disabilities through the Greater Houston Area Special Olympics, and by entertaining at a local event each summer to benefit the Fort Bend Literacy Council. The Orchestra's President, Amy Floyd was recently named 2006 Volunteer of the Year for the Greater Houston Area Special Olympics, and was also nominated for the 2006 Volunteer of the Year for Special Olympics Texas.
FBSO also has a mission to ensure that every child in Fort Bend County is touched by classical music before graduating high school. Research has shown that students' involvement in their school music program is crucial to a complete education. Musical study develops critical thinking and self discipline skills and improves a child's early cognitive development, basic math and reading abilities, self-esteem, SAT scores, ability to work in teams, spatial reasoning skills, and school attendance. Also, researchers have found that children involved with music education are less likely to be involved with gangs and substance abuse, and are more likely to graduate from high school and attend college. |
