Viswa_SubbaramanThe Fort Bend Symphony Orchestra is pleased to present “From the New World to the 'New World'” – an exciting collection of 20th century music – on Sunday, October 28 at 2:00 p.m. at the beautiful Stafford Centre (10505 Cash Road, Stafford, Texas, 77477) under the baton of Guest Conductor, Viswa Subbaraman.

The program includes a work about a boat race entitled Regatta by Austin, TX based James Norman, a young composer who is earning a reputation for writing demanding and exciting music.  "There's no denying the power and energy in the work," said D.L. Groover of the Houston Press in regards to Mr. Norman's recent opera premiere.  Next on the program is Elegy, incidental music written by Pulitzer Prize winning American composer, John Corigliano.  We go south of the border with Mexican composer Carlos Chavez’ Sinfonia India, a drivingly rhythmic piece, which finishes out the first half of the program.  The second half of the program will feature Czech composer Antonín Dvoøák’s Symphony No. 9 "From the New World," a perennial crowd favorite based on folk tunes he created mimicking those he heard during his time in America between 1892 and 1895.

Viswa Subbaraman is the Artistic Director and co-founder of Opera Vista, Houston’s newest innovative contemporary opera company.  His credits include serving as Assistant Conductor of the Orchestre National de France where he assisted Kurt Masur and visiting guest conductors such as Bernard Haitink, Riccardo Muti, and Sir Colin Davis. In 2006, he was invited to the Beethoven Seminar in Bonn, Germany and was also awarded the Herbert von Karajan Conducting Fellowship by the Herbert von Karajan Centrum and American Austrian Foundation, which resulted in his residency at the 2005 Salzburg Festival.  Mr. Subbaraman was a recipient of a Fulbright Grant to study in France and was subsequently offered the only renewal of a Fulbright Grant offered by the French Commission.
